Endometrial cancer is a common cancer of the female genital tract. It is also called uterus cancer, cancer of the uterine lining. It is caused by the unopposed estrogen hormone. Common symptoms are irregular heavy vaginal bleeding in perimenopausal women or post-menopausal bleeding. Ultrasound usually shows the increased thickness of the uterine lining. Diagnosis is done by biopsy which can be done under hysteroscopic guidance.
Treatment is done by surgery. Route of surgery can be open, laparoscopic, or robotic. Hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries with pelvic and paraaortic lymph node dissection. If the disease is in the advanced stage chemotherapy is given first to control the disease followed by surgery. The patient needs either observation or Adjuvant treatment according to the pathological stage of the disease. Adjuvant treatment may be radiotherapy or chemotherapy or both according report.
